CHILDREN AWAITING TREATMENT

WHO WE ARE

Gift of Life is a non-profit organisation based in Sweden which was founded in January 2019. Our aim is to help children born with congenital heart disease (CHD) get life-saving treatment.

We believe that all children have the right to a healthy and happy childhood irrespective of where they are born, the colour of their skin, the religion they belong to or the income of their families.

We currently support hospitals in India which provide FREE treatments for children born with CHD.

Our philosophy is based on the doctrine of "Love all, Serve all" and we believe all are equal irrespective of age, sex, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status or religion.

WHY INDIA?
India suffers as the world's capital of congenital heart disease accounting for more than 50% of the world's population of children and adults with CHD

Over 200,000 children are born each year with congenital heart disease in India

The problems India faces
Inadequate care

There is a tremendous gap between the need and available resources in India due to:

Shortage of qualified medical staff in all areas of pediatriac cardiac care (pediatric surgeons, pediatric cardiologists, intenssivists and specialised nurses).

Shortage of facilities which can provide specialised care

Inaccessible care
50% of Indias population lives in urban areas with scarce accessibility to healthcare
Unaffordable care
60% of households have a wage of less than 130 Euros/month.

Heart surgery in India costs between 2000-6000 Euros making it unaffordable for the mass majority of the population

The result is that only 10% of children get treatment with the devastating consequence of over 250 children dying EVERY SINGLE DAY due to untreated CHD

There are currently 25 million children and adults living in India with a CHD. This is more than twice the size of the population of Sweden.

Is there hope?Yes!

In 2012, a hospital dedicated to pediatric cardiac care was established in Naya Raipur, Chattisgarh, a rural area in central India which provides totally free-of-cost treatment for children with congenital heart disease. It has a screening programme for detecting children with heart ailments in rural parts of India as well as a progamme for supporting pregnant women by providing them with free medical care and medical and dietary supplements.

In 2016 the second of its kind was inaugurated in Palwal, Delhi and in November 2018 a third hospital was inaugurated in Navi Mumbai.

Our aim is to support these hospitals by raising awareness and providing economical and volunteer help by our volunteer and sponsorship programmes.
